Huge success on the Converse Hawaiian Open!!
Aloha everyone!
You may be thinking I am very slow
on the daily news lately, but
first of all surf has been really
slow,
August is always the worst month
of Summer for any side of the island,
and I am working very hard in a
HUGE new section of the site which
should be up on the next several
days.
IT IS SURPRISE !!!
Anyway, I am here and "don't worry"
if anything happen
I will be documenting for you.
This weekend at Ala Moana Bowls,
Honolulu,
the richest longboard competition
ever to be staged on Oahu's South Shore,
the $26,000 the Converse Hawaiian
Open
attracted close to 100 of the nation's
top male and female riders.
The event was the second of three
legs that will crown the 2003 men's
and women's United States Longboard
Champions.
Sponsor by Converse, Longboard
Magazine, Hobie Sports,
Toes On The Nose, O'Fish'L Fins,
Angulo Surfboards, Chans Surf Shop,
Downing Hawaii, Coolies, Duke's
Restaurant Waikiki,
Gidget girls clothing, Reyn Spooner
men's clothing, and Sticky Bumps surfboard wax.
Hawaii's Bonga Perkins won the
professional surfing's closest ever final.
Never has there been such a hotly
and evenly contested four man final as today,
with just 0.76 of a point separating
fourth from first.
Bonga scored 14.46 out of 20,
second placed was Joel Tudor (Del
Mar, Ca) - 14.16,
Joey Valentin (Hawaii) - 14.06,
and
Kai Sallas (Hawaii) - 13.7 points.
Perkins won $4,000, Tudor $2,000,
Valentin $1,500, and Sallas $1,000.
In contrast to the men's final,
San Diego's Julie Whitegon was
the clear winner of the women's division,
second was Joy Magelssen (Hawaii),
third Amy Lawson (Hawaii)and fourth Daize Shayne (California).
After two events, Perkins now leads
the men's rankings and
Whitegon is tied with fellow Californian
Summer Romero at the head of the women's rankings.
The third and final event of the
series, the Converse California Classic,
will be staged at Malibu's Surfrider
Beach in California, September 20-21.
Bonga/file
At this side of the island, East
side tops the list with
2 to 3 windswell waves and
on the North Shore,
the surf was tiny with rideable
little waves
at Chuns and Laniakea only.
