Friday 11/21/03
Aloha Friday with storm surf !!!
Surf was completely from Northeast
again today,
anywhere between 8 to 12 feet maybe
bigger on the open ocean swell, but
way to messy to measure it exactly.
Strong Northerly winds and even
messier conditions than yesterday.
Sunset was probably the only place
to surf beside Haleiwa, and
if you really wanted to.
Haleiwa was about 2 to 3 feet waves
tough conditions and inconsistent.
The third day of VANS Hawaiian
Pro at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park had the
round three of the men's division,
marking the entrance of seeded surfers world champion
Andy Irons and current world ratings
leader Kelly Slater.
Advancing to men's round four as
well were:
Brazilians Neco Padaratz, Armando
Daltro and Victor Ribas;
Australians Joel Parkinson, Shane
Powell and Troy Brooks,
USA Tim Curran and Frenchman Eric
Ribiere.
Also today was the final of the
women's Roxy Pro with
twenty year old Peruvian Sofia
Mulanovich taking first place and $6,000
second place was Hawaii's Melanie
Bartels, $3,000,
whose result today earned her the
2003 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series
(WQS) title.

Third place was Brazilian Maria
Tita Tavares, $2,300
and
fourth was Australian Samantha
Cornish, $1,700
Pre-teen up-and-coming surfer 11
years old Carissa Moore, Hawaii,
was awarded as the most inspirational
performance

Hazardous surf is expected to continue
along the East and North facing shores of all hawaiian islands
through the weekend and gradually
decline early next week.
Another swell will likely produce
advisory level surf heights
along North facing shores Monday
and Tuesday.(Caldwell)

HAWAIIAN THOUGHTS:
"The climatological average
based on 1968-2002
for the first double overhead swell
on North Shores for the new season is September 17th (+/- 9 days).
For high surf levels (15 feet face),
the average is September 29th (+/- 12 days).
The first Waimea day (25+ face)
averages to November 11th (+/- 28 days)(Pat Caldwell)."
"No matter how we choose
to go into the water,
whether it is surfing big waves,
surfing small waves, sailing, canoeing or swimming.
It is important that we can enjoy
ourselves and find peace(Clyde Aikau)."
