Saturday 12/13/03
It is all about Kelly and Andy !!
The second day of the Xbox Gerry
Lopez Pipeline Master,
final event of the Triple Crown
of Surfing and last event of the ASP world tour saw
4 to 6 feet Northwest swell in
the morning
with light tradewinds and pretty
good tube riding opportunities.
The surf dropped considerably in
the afternoon, but
the performances were as
high as it can possibly be when the best surfers in the world are out there.
The highlights of the day were:
first performances of the two contenders
for the 2003 ASP world tour title:
six times world champion from Florida
Kelly Slater and
current world champion from Hawaii
Andy Irons.
Both advance impeccable to the
next round.
Each of them are going to compete
on round three with
the two best waves of the day,
trialists and wild cards winners:
hawaiians Marcus Hickman and Kalani
Chapman, both with 10 pointer waves today.
There is one more day of competition
and it looks like it will be around Tuesday or Wednesday,
when there is a new large Northwest
swell expected.
Check back for full coverage and
photos of the ASP world tour rantings final event and
all the Pipeline Master happenings
and results.

"The climatological average
based on 1968-2002
for the first double overhead swell
on North Shores for the new season is September 17th (+/- 9 days).
For high surf levels (15 feet face),
the average is September 29th (+/- 12 days).
The first Waimea day (25+ face)
averages to November 11th (+/- 28 days)(Pat Caldwell)."
"No matter how we choose
to go into the water,
whether it is surfing big waves,
surfing small waves, sailing, canoeing or swimming.
It is important that we can enjoy
ourselves and find peace(Clyde Aikau)."
